Last time you shut off your quad, everything was working great…but now it won’t start. What do you do? First, check the battery. If it’s fully charged, move on and check the carburetor. If it’s not gummed up and seems to be in working order, check the ignition wire. If that’s not the culprit, install a new spark plug and see if it’ll fire up.

Are you still reading? Okay, if none of those are the reason your machine isn’t running, your next step is to delve deeper in to the carburetor. Pull out the pilot jet and look through it—if there’s any debris in it, you won’t see daylight. If it’s gunked up, replace it.

Next, check for spark. There may be an unplugged wire in the harness. Finally, if all else fails, check the stator. We suggest running through this list, but if you still can’t get your quad running bring it to a professional mechanic.

Fantastic Debut Win For Filtec Team KTM UK

Saturday, Filtec Team KTM UK traveled to Liverpool for their first competitive outing on the race ready KTM 505 SX, the Liverpool Arena playing host to a Pro Quad class as part of the ACU/FIM sanctioned Future West Promotions British SX Championship.

With a few changes to the team in the off season that saw Paul Holmes, current British Under 21 Champion and 3rd in the ACU British MMX Quad Championship in 2008, joining teen sensation James Hellewell to make the youngest team set up in UK quad racing, team mentor Richard Cole was confident that both riders would put in good performances around the technical and demanding circuit. As the evening drew to a close and the huge crowd of spectators headed homewards, both Paul and James had done themselves and the team proud, James extremely unlucky not to qualify as a result of other riders misfortunes in both heats but still showing fantastic speed and skill, while Paul dominated his qualifying heat and the final to take an amazing debut win for the Filtec Team KTM UK 505 SX.
Qualifying Heats

With series promoter John Hellam and the hardworking crew from Future West Promotions focused on providing a spectacle for the huge crowd of spectators from all four corners of the UK and beyond, specialist track builders Dirt Wurx were drafted in from the USA to design and build a track that would challenge all riders on both two wheels and four, with over two-thousand tons of dirt hauled in and painstakingly crafted in to a technical mixture of whoops, doubles, triples and rhythm sections. After a free practice session to learn the demanding circuit, both Paul and James lined up for the opening heat, with the top three from seven progressing to the final. As the gates dropped the Goldspeed MX-R’s hooked up well, Paul taking the holeshot with James settling in to 4th as they headed out on the first of seven laps. With the KTM 505 SX comfortably handling the many challenges around the circuit, both riders settled quickly in to a blistering pace in the early stages, Paul p ulling away at the front while James had moved past Liam Cater for 3rd with Josh Chilcott in his sights. As the race progressed Paul continued to pull away from the ensuing pack, taking the chequered flag for a convincing gate to flag win, but unfortunately for James his progress was abruptly halted at the halfway point, Chilcott losing control of his bike and coming across James path while James was airborne and unable to avoid a collision, both riders avoiding serious injury in the collision but unable to take further part in the race and forced to the last chance qualifier.

A second row start as a result of his finishing position in the previous heat left James with a lot of work to do in the LCQ, James rounding the first corner and out on the opening lap at the rear of the field. Quickly finding his rhythm and making the most of the excellent handling of the standard KTM, James began to move his way through the field, Josh Chilcott, James Behan and Brian Kerr all getting a good look at the rear of the KTM as James hunted down Liam Cater in 3rd. Catching Cater with two laps to go and picking his place to pass, James was ready to make his move through the whoop section but missed a gear on approach, the temporary loss of momentum allowing Cater to pull away slightly.
Quickly regaining his composure and dramatically reducing the margin in the closing stages, James continued to push to the chequered flag but time was not on his side, James finishing a respectable 4th but unable to progress to the final despite his valiant efforts.

Final

As the flag dropped for the start of the ten-lap final, Paul once again got fantastic drive of the line to take the holeshot and lead the eight strong field out on the opening lap. With a clear track in front and the WP suspension comfortably smoothing out the challenging terrain, Paul increased his tempo in the early stages of the moto to lead his nearest rival by almost half a lap at the halfway point. Giving an exhibition of quad riding skills and entertaining the huge crowd as he continued at a relentless pace, the Harrowgate native comfortably held the lead to the chequered flag for a dominating flag to flag win, Paul taking the Filtec Team KTM UK 505 SX to a convincing maiden UK victory in only his first supercross event.

Paul Holmes

This has been an amazing event and result for both myself and the team. Unlike some of the other riders competing today, I’ve never ridden supercross before and to have won my maiden event is a fantastic feeling. The KTM was absolutely fantastic to ride and handled really well, and despite a lack of bike time prior to the event to experiment with the suspension we quickly found a set up that worked. The event organisers and the track builders have done an excellent job, and to ride in front of a crowd like this is absolutely fantastic and hopefully we will see more events like this cater for Quad’s in the future. In the meantime I’m really looking forward to the next round at the O2 Arena next Saturday 31st where I’ll be aiming for a repeat performance.

James Hellewell

I’m obviously disappointed at not qualifying for the final, but that’s racing for you and sometimes things happen which you can’t really do much about. On the positive side I know my speed is good and I felt really comfortable on the bike despite not having much bike time recently. The KTM is an absolutely amazing bike to ride, and when described as race ready the phrase “it does exactly what is says on the tin” springs to mind. It’s a really fast bike and handles everything that is asked of it, so I’m really looking forward to the O2 Arena next weekend and the remainder of the year ahead.

Richard Cole

This has been a brilliant event in all aspects and the end result has been fantastic for the riders, the team and I would also say the sport. This has been the first outing for the new team on the new bikes, so for Paul to have won as comfortably as he did, in only his first Supercross event, is a testament to the skills and quality of both Paul and the KTM 505 SX. The only change we made to the bikes prior to the event was to slip on some Goldspeed MXF and MXR tyres, so to win our debut race against all the other full race spec machines is no small achievement. I feel really disappointed for James as he is a fantastic rider and has the skills and speed to do well in events like this, but he was really unlucky in both heats at the hands of other riders and didn’t get the result he deserved. It’s been a great start to the year for the Filtec Team KTM UK team and I’m really looking forward to the next round in London on the 31st and the rest of the season beyond.

Final Results

1. Paul Holmes, KTM ATV
2. Richard Tordoff
3. Oliver Sansom
4. Justin Reid
5. Ben Harman

When you’re working on your quad, it’s easy to lose track of which bolt came from what spot. The way we keep track when working on our ATVs is by placing all the bolts we remove back into their locations once the part has been separated from them. If they have a nut associated with them, we put the nut finger tight on the backside. For example, if you are removing linkage, some bolts must face a certain direction and are very close in length and diameter to others but should not be mixed up. By placing each bolt back into its stock frame location as you go, you’ll save yourself headaches later. And trust us, we learned this one the hard way!

To finish off a disc brake bleeding session, top off the master cylinder with fluid and open the bleeder once you are confident that the bleeding is done. Then pry the brake pads back (open the caliper up) and pump the brake lever one more time, being sure to hold the lever in. Now close the bleeder and pump the lever until it has a good, strong feel. This technique will pop out any bubbles that have lodged themselves behind the caliper pistons during the bleeding process.

If you’re lucky enough to be able to ride your quad out of your garage and onto a trail…well, then we’re jealous. The rest of us have to load up our quads either in the back of pickup trucks or on a trailer and drive it to the nearest trail system or track. Getting your quad secured for the trip with tie downs is very important, very easy, and something that some people don’t know how to do correctly.

You want to place the tie-downs in a way that collapses the suspension of your ATV. For example, place tie-downs on the rear grab bar and on the front handlebars. When you tighten the straps, they should collapse the suspension. Also, make sure there is tension both forward and backward on the quad so it doesn’t roll off the flatbed. Two tie-downs from each end works well. And make sure that you have high-quality tie-downs. The cheaply made, thin tie-downs easily snap and break…trust us. Get the nice tie downs to keep your quad safe on the journey!

Removing Phillips head screws can be tedious, especially if they’ve been sitting for a long time. They strip out easily and always seem to be much tighter than necessary. To avoid stripping these screws, first clean the head so that a screwdriver can be inserted without debris clogging it up. Second, use a hammer to tap the screwdriver into the screw head—this gives the screwdriver a stronger positive contact with the head of the screw, which greatly decreases the chances of stripping it out.

Some riders put a lot of time and effort into installing an inline fuel filter on their machine. Most quads already have a fuel filter in the petcock, though, and adding another one is overkill. The amount of dirt that can enter your ATV’s engine through the fuel line is minimal, and if you’re buying good fuel (like you should be) the chances of sediment clogging jets up is small.

The chances of sediment from your fuel causing any engine damage is nothing compared to the reality of a poorly maintained air filter. A damaged or dirty air filter can let large chunks of debris pass into the engine, which could be catastrophic. In other words, check the air filter often and clean it when it looks even a little dirty!

If big sand dunes are what get you and your quad revved up, we have a tip to keep you pulling all the way up and over. The general rule is that you want to crest the big dune as fourth gear stops pulling (if you’ve done significant modifications to your dune machine, the gear may change).

Next time you go to a big sand hill, try starting about 20 feet closer than your usual start position and see if you can still grab through the gears like you normally do. If you can’t grab fourth (or the gear your ATV usually reaches), your quad may benefit from one more tooth on its rear sprocket. Adding a tooth will give your quad quicker acceleration and put your machine in the meat of the powerband as you crest the hill. Conversely, if your machine revs out too fast, then you may want to go down a tooth on the rear sprocket.

Try it out—better gearing can unleash more horsepower from your machine!

There are lots of different brake pads that use a lot of different compounds to bring your quad to a halt. But what are the right kind of brakes for your machine?

Sintered metal pads, which usually come stock on a quad, are great for mud riding or any other kind of riding where you get a lot of grit coming in contact with the brake pads (such as mud riding). If you’re more into high-speed racing and trail riding, you should consider putting a pad with a composite compound on your machine. They are a little softer and provide better braking feel, but the trade-off is you’ll have to change the brake pads more often.

Rounding out the roster of Flexx Handlebar controlled teams racing the WORCS series is long time Flexx Handlebar users Dats Racing Kawasaki.

“We’ve been working on signing Cafro’s team for a couple of years but the timing was never right for both of us. Cafro has a long history of great results built around a very well tested program, I’m stoked he realized the performance value the Flexx Handlebars offer him and his riders” said Chris Avery, athlete manager for Fasst Company. “It was a similar situation with Eichner as well. For 2009 everything came together with both teams so we can really build on the base we’ve achieved in the WORCS series from working with the Dats team.”

Fasst Company was pleased that the MCR team signed their highest placing rider in the 2008 WORCS series, Beau Barron, who has been on the Flexx System for the past two years. “I have been using the Flexx System and I wouldn’t race without them. They were an important part of my program last year and I’m stoked that the MCR team is using them,” commented Barron.

If you’re cruising on forest trails, you’ll encounter a fallen tree eventually. Some fallen logs can be avoided by simply going around them, but if you’re on a narrow trail your options may be limited to either going over it or turning around and going back.

Rolling over a fallen tree straight on can lead to your machine getting stuck with the front two wheels dangling over it. To avoid getting hung up on the log, approach it at an angle and roll over it one wheel at a time. this method works well on deep rain ruts, too.

If you’re traveling up, up, up a mountain with your quad (to a higher altitude than where you live) you’ll need to adjust the carburetor to keep the air/fuel mixture correct. The general rule for jetting is to drop one main jet size for every 2,000 feet of elevation increase. You can also go one clip position leaner on the needle jet.

This is a good start for high-altitude adventuring, but depending on the temperature and humidity, you may need to go leaner or a touch richer. If carb adjustments aren’t your thing, bring it to a mechanic and explain what altitude you’ll be riding at so he can make the correct adjustments.

GNCC Racing Announces Supplemental Rules and Classes for 2009

Morgantown, W.Va. (January 13, 2009) – Racer Productions, producers of the Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series, has announced the supplemental rules and classes for the 2009 GNCC tour.

The rules were discussed at the GNCC Riders Meetings in November, and Racer Productions posted a proposed version of the rulebook on the gnccracing.com Web site in December. After a public comment period, the rules are now posted as final.

Click here to access the 2009 GNCC Class List

Changes highlighted for ATVs include raising the displacement limit in the 4×4 Open and 4×4 Limited Classes from 840cc to 850cc. The Supermini ATV Class now allows 12-year-old riders on ATVs up to 70-105cc two-stroke machines and 70-125cc four-stroke machines. And, as announced previous to the 2008 GNCC Series, for 2009, machines in the ATV XC1 and XC2 Classes will be limited to 450cc in displacement.

No major changes will occur in the bike classes. While Racer Productions had considered making changes to the XC2 Pro Lites bike class, the class will remain limited to 250cc four-strokes and 125cc two-strokes.

“Due to today’s economic environment, we’ve looked carefully over the GNCC rule book and class structure to make sure it fits the needs of today’s racers,” said GNCC Trail Boss Jeff Russell. “We know off-road racers are a dedicated bunch, so we’re looking forward to a solid season.”

The 2009 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series begins with the Parts Unlimited River Ranch GNCC in River Ranch, Florida, which runs February 18 through March 3. For more information, go to www.gnccracing.com.

The cleanup went really good, a ton of people showed up and everyone helped with the cleanup. We rod out to Olds with two UTV’s and a truck and picked up everything in site. My two kids had a blast, I just wished they would pickup there toys like they picked up trash over the weekend. After filling up several bags of trash we loaded up and started on our way back.

Our buddy in the truck picked the wrong line and ran out of talent as he nearly rolled his truck over. It took us a little over an hour a couple tow straps a jeep and another truck for support to pull our friend out of his mess. We arrived back at vendors flats by the Glamis Beach store and eat lunch while we watched the raffle for prizes go on, before we headed back to the dunes for a fun ride back to camp.

You like the throttle on your quad, right? You use it a lot, right? Right. What happens if your throttle cable gets damaged or breaks while you’re out on the trail? Well, you’re either walking home or you’re stuck waiting for a rescue.

Bring along a spare throttle cable when you ride. You can duct tape an extra throttle cable to your quad’s existing cable, which means you don’t have to carry the cable in your backpack or storage compartment. Make sure that when you tape it to the current cable that there’s no way it can be ripped away…but remember a little bit of tape goes a long way. Thoroughly tape up both ends of the spare cable so that it doesn’t get clogged up with dirt.

And an extra cable does you no good if you don’t have the tools to install it. Make sure your quad’s tool kit has the right stuff.

Creagan and Prowler Begin 2009 Season on the Podium

Third place in the UTV class at the Parker 250

Minneapolis, Minn. (January 16, 2009) – Team Arctic racer Jim Creagan isn’t kidding when he calls the Arctic Prowler, “The toughest UTV in the desert.” At the opening round of the Best In The Desert (BITD) off-road series in Parker, Ariz., Creagan dusted off his team’s 700 XTX EFI that finished second in the Baja 1000 just two months ago, put a heavy foot on the gas and raced to a strong third place.

“This season our goal is to win the UTV class championship, which required a good finish at the Parker 250,” said Creagan. “We will campaign a Prowler 1000 XTZ in the remaining races, but it wasn’t ready for Parker. So we freshened up our Baja-worn 700, rode at the ragged edge and proved that we could once again put a stock Prowler against all the fully modified racers.”

In truth, Creagan and his team have little to prove in the rough world of off-road desert racing, having finished first and second in the side-by-side UTV class in the 2008 Baja 1000. It marked the first time a UTV has ever finished the grueling race and highlighted the performance and durability of the race-winning Prowler 1000 XTZ, as well as the second-place Prowler 700 XTX EFI.

Creagan (of Yacott, Wash.) and his son (and co-driver) Tabor Cresap followed a very different strategy for the Parker 250 than they used at the Baja 1000.

“To finish 1000 miles of Baja, you have to ride smart and in control,” Creagan said. “Parker was a 170-mile sprint against fully modified machines with powered-up engines, aftermarket suspensions and long-travel kits. Our 700 XTX had a stock engine, stock chassis and stock suspension.

“So I put my foot down on the gas and rarely lifted during the entire race. The Parker course was typically brutal, with rocks, sand washes, high speed sections and technical areas. We were absolutely thrashing our machine, but there were no problems. It was just gas-and-go at the fuel stops.”

Creagan and Cresap finished the race in four hours and fifty-five minutes, thanks to their hard driving and expertly executed fuel stops by crew members Chris Fallon and Mark Vories. Both driver and co-driver anticipate higher finishes at the six remaining BITD events, thanks to the higher top-speeds from their soon-to-be-complete Prowler 1000 XTZ.

“The 1000 XTZ will be fast enough to out-run our competitors’ modified machines,” said Creagan. “We’re optimistic about climbing a step or two up the podium.”

The team is sponsored by Arctic Cat, Wired Energy Drink, Vision X Lighting, GBC Motorsports and King Shocks.

Their next race is at the Terrible 250 in Primm, Nev., April 17-19.

If you haven’t changed your quad’s brake fluid lately, it’s time to bleed those brakes. If your ATV has mechanical drum brakes, don’t worry about it, but disc brake fluid collects moisture from condensation and should be changed once a year. Most manufacturers suggest a minimum of DOT 4 fluid and we suggest something of the high-temperature variety, such as Motul RBF 600. High-temperature fluid is worth adding because it provides the most consistent braking feel.

Before adding new fluid, make sure you flush all of the old stuff out of the system. Check your quad’s repair manual (you should own one) for specific instructions. If you feel overwhelmed, take it to a professional…because brakes are nothing to toy around with. You need them!

If your quad’s axle hubs keep coming loose, no matter how many times you take a torque wrench and tighten them to the specified torque, here’s a quick and easy fix. Get some Loctite stud and bearing mount and put a liberal amount on the splines and bolt on the hubs and let the Loctite dry. You’ll have to let it cure for up to 24 hours, so plan around any riding you want to do. Once the Loctite is dry, the hubs should stay right where you want them.

Rider Name: Chad Wienen
Date Of Birth: January 25, 1985
Place Of Birth: Galena, IL
Residence: Galena, IL
Current Race Quad: Kawasaki 450R
Team: Monster Energy Kawasaki
2009 Race Series: AMA/ATVA ATV Championship Series
Turned Pro: 2005
Height: 6′2″
First Race: at the age of 16
First National Win: 2004 High Point then in ‘05 had his Pro Class debut on the same track.

We caught up with the Newest member of the Factory Monster Energy Kawasaki Team, Chad Wienen, and got the scoop on his plans for the upcoming season in this week’s, Friday 5!

QUAD: How has pre-season testing been going so far?

Wienen: We have been doing a little bit of testing—I’ve been down in Splendora Texas, and it’s been going really good. We are mainly testing engines and I finally got some new components on the chassis. Everything is working out really good. The bike is working excellent. We have some new tires and stuff like that this year. I’m just really excited to get a total package together and looking at this week we are going to have a good base point on what we are going to be racing this year.

QUAD: How are you adapting to your new ride?

Wienen: The new ride here at Kawi is really exciting. The people here are great—going from Suzuki to Kawi has actually been a step for me. They know what it takes to go out and win and they are ready to go out and win and that’s what I’m here to do. Josh has been really helping me out with the transition. Us working together is going to be a win-win situation and the people that are going to be racing against us…well, I think are going to have their hands full.

QUAD: How does the shoulder feel? Are you going to be 100% for the season?

Wienen: Yes I am. I’ve been doing a lot of weight training. My shoulder feels strong, if not stronger than it’s ever been. The main thing this year is to keep myself 100% and everything will fall into place from there.

QUAD: What does it mean to be on the Kawasaki team this year?

Wienen: Well it really means a lot to me. I’m just hoping that I found a home here at Kawasaki. I’d like to be able to ride for them for the next 10-15 years–that’s the ultimate goal for me. I believe that their ATV Motocross division is really serious about the sport and that’s what I’m all about. I want to progress the sport and get our name out there and hopefully be as big as the bikes some day, and the people here are more then ready to do something like that. That’s what drives me to go out and work harder and push forward heading into the ‘09 season. I’d like to deliver them their first championship.

QUAD: Here are a couple off questions for you. Pizza or Pasta?

Wienen: Definitely pasta. I’m not a big pizza person I guess you would say. I mean it’s good to get it every once in a while but I’m more into the pasta stuff.

QUAD: Alright last one and I’ll let you get back to it. Football or Baseball?

Wienen: Definitely Football. I have got a long love for football. I played football in high school and had chances to go on and play college ball but decided to go racing instead. So as of right now if I had the chance to I would go off to college just to play football.

If you have a tire that’s leaking from the bead, break the tire from the wheel and clean the bead, then reseat the tire. IF it still leaks, the bead may actually be damaged. Break it down again, liberally coat the bead area with silicone, and reseat the bead. Lower the tire pressure to less than four pounds until the silicone has set up. You should then have a leak-free bead.

Four Stroke Wars — Glamis, CA — January 10, 2009

Story and Photos by: Enrico Pavia

On Friday night I was out with friends and decided to call Ricky from RIS Designs and ask him about his plans for the drags which for some reason I thought where taking place the following weekend. It was probably 8pm at the time that I called, Ricky instantly corrected me and told me that the races where taking place the following day. I was bummed because Saturday night we had scheduled to race a Polaris RZR S in Anaheim Stadium during the Monster Truck Jam which was in front of a 40,000 plus sold out crowd.  I didn’t know what to do I really wanted to get out to the sand drags but I already pre-booked the UTVcross race and couldn’t back out. I worked out a suicide mission with a good friend of mine, lets just call him “Monkey Boy” It’s easier and that is what all his duning buddies call him.

Back to our mission, Monkey Boy and I planned out a way to make both events we both knew by doing so we would be hurting by the end of the night. I didn’t care I love watching the drags so no sleep was worth it. We decided to run down to the office at like 4 A.M. we then loaded up the Teryx and all the camera gear. It was now 5:30 A.M. by the time we started racing down to Glamis. We managed to only make one food and fuel stop on the drive out which put us in Glamis at around 9:00 A.M.

I hooked up with Tony which is Ricky’s younger brother and shot one of his show bikes for a online Feature which we linked to here if you want to check it out
http://quad.transworld.net/2009/01/13/quad-check-ris-design/.

I was hoping the Four Stroke Wars would start at 10 A.M. but they where running behind letting the racers have extra time to prep and dial in their ATV’s a bit more. My problem was I had until noon before I would have to hightail out of there in order to make it to the Monster Truck Jam in time. Things where not looking good It was now 12:30 P.M. and the races still have not started.

I was bummed for not getting to catch any of the real racing action but at the same time was satisfied to at least catch a number of the bikes during practice, while everyone was feeling out the freshly groomed drag strip at Olds.

Here is a little from the promoter of the 4 Stroke Wars,

“The races just keep getting better and better. We had a huge group of spectators at Glamis, reminded me of the last FSW in 2005. Awesome! Alot of new faces, can’t wait till Dumont.

A big thanks to Roy Ulrich and family for all their help with set up, tear down, and officiating. Roy has become my left hand and I can’t thank him enough for what he sacrifices for FSA. Thanks to Tim Jones for all his photography.

Tom Phillips, Shawn, and crew were a huge help with set up, officiating, and photography. What a great group of guys and your work was very much appreciated.

We have so many people that pitch in one way or another, its just amazing to us. Thanks to all that help us put on these events and make FSA what it is.

Congratulations to all the winners!!!!!!!”

Jeremiah Jones and Bill Ballance Cross Country Riding School

Want to learn from two of the best racers in the world? Are you looking for ways to go faster in the woods? If so, motocross champ Jeremiah Jones and multi-time GNCC champ Bill Ballance are planning on hosting a riding school on February 21st at the Motoplex XC course in Madison, Florida. The cost of the school is $350 per person.
All ages are welcome and the cutoff is 15 riders a class. The location will be at the new Florida Motoplex XC course, which is a 7 mile long loop. Jeremiah wanted to pass along to everyone that you can “show up as if you are going to a race or just to ride”. Their goal is to work with riders on all aspects of XC riding along with helping out with some MX lessons as well. This is an awesome opportunity for riders to work with two of the best in the business!
Jeremiah and Bill are currently looking for all inquiries interested in the class—you can contact Jeremiah via email at slick23racing@hotmail.com.

And in case you missed it, here’s another look at Bill’s brand new YFZR he just finished prepping for the upcoming GNCC season.

Bent brake rotors causing you troubles? Mildly bent brake rotors are easy to fix, and it’s something you can do in your own garage. Telltale signs of a bent rotor are dragging brakes, spongy braking, or one front wheel locking up before the other (the rotor of the wheel that locks up should be good, so investigate the other rotor).

To inspect for a bent rotor, take the wheel off and pry the brake pads open so there is a visible gap on both sides of the rotor. Spin the hub around while watching the rotor. Look for the gap to close up against the brake pad. Once you spot the pad closing against the rotor, mark that area with a Sharpie marker. Now put a large crescent wrench on the rotor where the mark is and bend it slightly away from the pad. Roll it around and check the gap again; it will likely take several attempts to get it straightened out completely. When the rotor is straight, the brakes will work better and your quad may even be slightly faster, as rolling resistance will be eliminated.

If your quad’s clutch lever (if it has a clutch lever) is too stiff, here’s a few tips on how to correct the problem. First and foremost, clutch cables and housings are wear items and the cable can have a large impact on the clutch pull. Muddy exposure or regular pressure washing can make them wear much quicker than you think. Try replacing the cable

Many aftermarket clutch levers (especially the cheap imports) have a bad ratio, so it makes the clutch pull too stiffly. We’ve found that the stock Honda CR250 dirt bike lever is one of the best, and it can be used on just about any performance quad. The Works Connection lever has the same pull ratio as the Honda but also has adjust-on-the-fly and hot-start features.

Finally, inspect your quad’s clutch basket to see if it has grooves in it. Look specifically where the fiber plates drive the basket—grooves there will lead to a stiff pull and premature clutch wear. It can also lead to a broken basket.

There’s a right way and a wrong way to tackling a section of whoops. We won’t go into detail about how to do it the wrong way, because chances are you already know that. We’ve got a tip to keep your quad floating over those whoops, so you don’t end up saying “whoops”.

Think of attacking whoops as if you were skipping a stone over water—you want to skim from the top of one whoop to the next without dipping into the valleys in between. When entering a whoop section, approach the lip of the first roller with a moderate amount of speed; apply enough throttle to keep the front end light. Pull up on the front end and gas it so the rear tires carry enough momentum to the top of the next whoop. Continue applying a constant amount of throttle so the quad “hops” from the top of one whoop to the next.

We have been following the performance of the Italian journalist Camelia Liparoti as she racer her KTM 525 XC ATV through the roughest terrain ever at The Dakar race. The race has just past the half way mark so check out the next eight pages to see course maps, terrain info, photos, race recaps and more.

Stage 1

Saturday January 4, 2009

Camelia Liparoti (KTM Quad 525 XC)
Today was the first time I have ever ridden my KTM quad and I felt straightaway at home. The bike is comfortable and powerful and easy to ride. As it was our first day together I rode cool but the signs are very positive. The track wasn’t very suited to quads and we were caught by the first 10 cars very quickly. Then we couldn’t go very fast beacuse of the dust. The most amazing thing was the public - there were so many people and so friendly. Amazing!

Two more Dakar first for KTM: First KTM ATV ridden by a woman

KTM is no stranger to setting records at the Dakar, the most gruelling offroad test on the international racing circuit.

But this year when Italian photographer and journalist Camelia Liparoti opens the throttle of her KTM 525 XC ATV on the starting line, it signals two more firsts for the “Made in Austria” machines.

Liparoti is the first rider of a KTM ATV in the race that this year traverses over 9.574 km of the toughest terrain that Argentina and Chile can deliver, and she will be the first woman to do so on the new orange machine.

First time as a competitor
The Italian rider, who has previously participated in the Dakar as a journalist will now see the race from an entirely new perspective and she describes the new adventure as a childhood dream come true. “This is the first participation for me and my quad as a competitor at Dakar,” she said. “It will be a very difficult race, I will try and stay focused and in harmony with my KTM ATV that I adore. It will be a double discovery: a new quad with extraordinary performances and a route through two fascinating countries.”

Proven passion for rallies
A resident of the Chamonix Valley in France, Liparoti is no stranger to mountain environments and this will no doubt help her as she crosses back and forth across the Andes Mountains that will elevate her and other competitors into oxygen robbing altitudes. A rock climber and mountaineering enthusiast, she also has the courage and stamina to attack the 15-day epic. She has also been a competitor in other rallies such as the Shamrock, the Dakar Series and the Pharaons’ Rally, all that were very good preparation for this year’s edition of the Dakar.

The U.S. Senate is poised to act as early as Sunday on a massive package of public lands bills that would shut motorcyclists out of more than 1 million acres without adequate public comment, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

The last-minute move just as the newly elected Congress takes over has raised the ire of the AMA and at least one congressman, who believe the proposal and process deserve more public participation.

“Those who say things get better with time obviously never encountered the public lands omnibus bill,” said U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop (R-Utah). “This bill was a bad idea last Congress, and it’s only gotten worse over the past month.”

Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations, agreed.

“It makes little sense to lump together more than 160 very important public lands bills into one package that is nearly 1,300 pages long, and then expect the public to digest it all — and to rush a vote through the Senate on a weekend,” Moreland said.

More than 160 public lands bills have been grouped together by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. The package would create more than 1 million acres of designated Wilderness land, which would shut out all motorized vehicles.

The last-minute congressional maneuver would also make the National Landscape Conservation System permanent. This system creates an additional level of bureaucracy for the National System of Public Lands and would remove much of the authority of the existing agency in managing those lands.

“Congress should put together a new package and pass it through committee rather than debate legislation carried over from the previous Congress,” Rep. Bishop said. “Poor process produces poor product, and this is an example of congressional process at its worst. Parts of this bill are good, and parts are very bad. Each part deserves to be discussed and voted on its own merits.”

“Continued responsible access to public lands is a vitally important right for current and future generations,” added Moreland. “This measure deserves to be fully analyzed and thoughtfully debated in the next Congress prior to a final vote.”

All AMA members and anyone else who enjoys outdoor recreation are urged to contact their U.S. senators and ask them to oppose the omnibus public lands bill. An easy way to contact your senators is in the “Issues & Legislation” area of the Rights section of the AMA website at www.AmericanMotorcyclist.com.

Loctite Threadlocker is used by a lot of mechanics to keep parts (such as bolts and fasteners) from coming loose. But there are three different types of Loctite…so how do you choose the right one for the job?

BLUE (242): Medium Strength. Ideal for nuts and bolts that you adjust regularly. Hand tools are adequate for removal.

RED (271) High Strength. Good for nuts, bolts, and studs that are prone to loosening. Heat may be required for removal.

Green (290) Extreme Strength. Put a drop on and it will wick into the threads of assembled parts. Special tools and heat may be required for removal.

Quad batteries aren’t cheap, if you haven’t noticed. So, it’s worth it to keep an eye on the overall health of your quad’s battery. First, keep the terminals clean from corrosion and dirt. Also, if you have a non-sealed-type battery and you notice the acid level is dipping past the full mark, fill it with distilled water. If you don’t ride your ATV during winter months (or even if you let it sit for a while in the summer), hook the battery up to a Battery Tender to keep it charged and healthy during the off season. And if you live in a frigid winter climate, store your quad’s batter in a warm, dry place with the Battery Tender attached.

Do you get more flat tires than anyone you ride with? If you’re getting sidewall cuts, it could be due to the way you ride. If you go into corners too hot and slam into rocks, you might be the reason your tires can’t hold up. Try easing off the throttle at the entrance of a corner and then gain speed at the corner exit. If the holes in your tires are in the center, add more air pressure. Higher air pressure makes the tires more flat resistant.

We caught up with factory Can-Am rider Cody Miller to get the scoop on his plans for the upcoming GNC motocross season in this week’s, Friday 5!

QUAD: What’s New with you? Anything wild going down at the Miller compound?

Miller: The miller compound now has a 4 min lap time and we have been doing a bunch of 7 to 8 lap motos! Its killer.. we also spend a lot of time driving 4×4 trucks and hanging out at the local lake - and of course, working out.

QUAD: Rumor has it that your brother will be riding Can-Am this year as well, but only on the west coast?

Miller: Yes my brother (Hunter) just flew out on the 5th on January to go ride his 1st “best in the desert” race for the Epic Can-Am team on the west coast. He will also be racing the ITP Quadcross, and WORCS series!

QUAD: So what’s the official team for factory Can-Am? Any drastic changes?

Miller: I would say the main Can-Am team is the Warnert Racing team, however the Epic and Motoworks teams are just as serious about winning for Can-Am as we are. The major changes that I know of are the Epic team going west coast racing and the Motoworks team are going east coast.

QUAD: Steel City; what happened and have you recovered 100% from that injury?

Miller: At the steel city invitational race I had a mechanical malfunction in the first moto race, so I had a DNF. However there was an amateur national the next day that Sage Baker, Thomas Brown, Hunter Miller and I raced our dirt bikes in. During the 1st moto of my dirt bike race, I went over the bars on a big step up jump. I stuck my arm out to catch myself and it bent backwards at the elbow, causing it to dislocate and brake in a few places. Since then I have made a full recovery and have polished up my dirt biking skills, so hopefully I won’t make the same mistake again.

QUAD: Have you guys done any more extensive work to make the DS450 a top contender this year?

Miller: Yes the DS450 will be a top contender in 2009! The team brought in Walsh Race Craft on-board this year and they have made some major changes to the bike. Also Rage ATV has found loads more HP out of the ROTAX 450 engine. So expect John Natalie and I to do quite well on the new DS450.

QUAD: Thanks for your time and good luck this year!

Miller: Thank You!

You should prep for mud riding before even getting the bottom of your boots dirty. Before hitting the pit, spray your quad down with a silicone spray…in the past we’ve even used Pam cooking spray on our quad to keep the mud from sticking to it. This will make your post-pit cleanup much easier. The mud should fall right off with a good pressure washing. And of course, wash your quad immediately after mud riding. You can bring a pressure washer with you (if you have a water hookup) or you can run through a car wash and hose it down there. Don’t let that glop dry on your quad for even an hour, because it’ll be ten times harder to clean off once it’s solidified.

Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., via the company’s new OHV Access Initiative, injected more than $700,000 in cash and equipment in 2008 directly into projects across the country supporting safe, responsible riding and sustainable, open riding areas.

In the program’s first year, Yamaha took a leadership role in the ongoing issue of OHV access by providing GRANTs (Guaranteeing Responsible Access to our Nation’s Trails) to more than 65 local, regional and national organizations representing the greater OHV community.  Awardees from the OHV Access Initiative’s fourth quarter funding cycle include:

· The California Trail Users Coalition

· Cheaha Trailriders, Alabama

· Aitkin County, Minnesota

· Arrowhead ATV Club, Minnesota

· Dixie National Forest, Cedar City Ranger District, Utah

· Florida Trail Riders

· Lewis County Department of Forestry, Parks & Recreation, New York

· Paul Bunyan Forest Riders, Minnesota

· Rose City – Lupton Area Chamber of Commerce, Michigan

· Embarrass River ATV Park and Campground, Wisconsin

· Town of Rome, Dyracuse Recreational Park, Wisconsin

“By directly funding public and private land management and enthusiast-initiated projects, the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative is leading the grassroots effort in creating and sustaining safe and responsible riding opportunities,” said Mike Martinez, Yamaha’s general manager of ATV and Side-by-Side (SxS) Operations. “These GRANTs have become an important asset to the OHV community and we are pleased to continue this support into 2009.”

The primary purpose of the OHV Access Initiative is to provide funding of OHV access-related projects that include, but are not limited to:

· Trail development, restoration and maintenance

· Trail signage and map production

· Staging area construction, renovation and maintenance

· Land stewardship and education

· Responsible OHV riding education and outreach

· Legislative lobbying efforts

“This year, the OHV Access Initiative has demonstrated the ability to make a significant impact where it counts the most – on the ground,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s ATV/SxS marketing manager.  “Riders, land managers and OHV groups are working together to submit quality applications in support of long-term access goals.  Yamaha plans to expand this program and build on its success in supporting the OHV community well into 2009 and beyond.”

About the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative

Each quarter, Yamaha accepts applications from non-profit or tax-exempt organizations including OHV riding clubs, national forests and associations, and national, state and local government agencies. A committee then reviews each application and awards GRANTs to deserving projects. Applications for the first quarter of 2009 will be accepted through February 28, 2009.

Updated guidelines, an application form and information on the OHV Access Initiative are available at:

www.yamaha-motor.com/ohvaccess.  For questions regarding the OHV Access Initiative, groups can call Yamaha’s dedicated OHV Access Initiative Hotline at 1-877-OHV-TRAIL (877-648-8724), email OHVAccess@yamaha-motor.com or write to: Yamaha OHV Access Initiative Review Committee, 6555 Katella Avenue, Cypress, CA 90630-5101.

If you’re replacing your quad’s clutch fibers and plates, never mix and match them. If your stock plates look fine but the fibers are worn out, replace them with a complete new set of fibers and plates. You shouldn’t mix, for instance, Hinson clutch plates with your quad’s stock fibers, or vice versa. These components are designed very specifically to work together, and playing “hodge podge clutch” won’t get you very far out on the trail. So, if you replace one part, replace them all!

EVS’ Freighter Bag has a fold-out changing mat, wheels, and measures 16×18x32. We figure that’s enough room for everything except the girl.

There are two basic air filter types: paper element filters (such as K&N) and foam filters. It’s important to choose the right one for your quad.

Paper element filters provide great airflow and most times show a dyno advantage. They are the best for quads that spend a lot of times in the sand, woods, and trails. But when you ride in dusty conditions, always use an Outerwear or K&N precharger. Without the filter wraps, paper filters can pass fine dust particles, which is why they’re not ideal for desert racing or silty conditions.

Foam air filters are recommended for desert and really dusty conditions. But keep an eye on the cleanliness of the filter as you ride—foam filters can load up with sand and pass some of it into the intake tract. If you’re doing serious desert or sand riding, bring an extra clean filter and swap it out half way through the day. Dual stage foam filters are great all-around air filters, but don’t flow quite as well as the K&N or oiled gauze-type air filters.

American Motorcyclist Association announces 85th anniversary celebration at 2009 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days

Historic motorcycle parade to headline the event

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to announce that the Association will celebrate its 85th anniversary year in 2009 with a number of activities and events, culminating with AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 24-26, at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

One eye-catching activity at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days will be a motorcycle parade with bikes representing the more than eight decades the AMA has been protecting riders’ rights, from 1924 through 2009. This distinctive collection of motorcycles will provide a physical and visual representation of the long and varied history of the AMA.

“We’re excited about pulling together this rich symbol of the AMA’s history, and assembling such a diverse collection of motorcycles will be no small feat,” said Tigra Tsujikawa, AMA marketing and special events manager. “If any of our members would like to have his or her motorcycle considered for this special opportunity, I encourage them to call the AMA’s Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum at (614) 856-2221 or e-mail us at 85thparade@ama-cycle.org for details.”

Founded in 1924, the AMA quickly became a national voice for the growing number of motorcycle clubs and riders in the U.S., a legacy that the Association has carried forward ever since. Today the AMA is the country’s leading advocate for the protection and promotion of the motorcycling lifestyle and — with more than 300,000 members — it has grown to become the largest motorcycling organization in the world.

“During our 85 years, the AMA has undergone numerous changes to meet the evolving needs of our membership,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Currently, the AMA is positioning the organization to better serve all motorcyclists for the next 85 years and beyond. In 2009, we will recognize both this landmark anniversary and this exciting time of change with various events and activities, culminating at one of the year’s can’t-miss motorcycling events, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.”

In addition to the 85th anniversary celebration motorcycle parade, the AMA is asking its members to help the Association tell its story.

“We want to know from AMA members, ‘Why did you join the AMA? What does motorcycling mean to you? What events, bikes or people represent your most memorable motorcycling moments?’” said Tsujikawa. “Remember that a picture tells a thousand words, so please include photographs whenever possible.”

AMA members can e-mail their memories to 85thmemories@ama-cycle.org.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, the proceeds of which benefit the AMA’s Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, has grown to become America’s grandest celebration of motorcycling heritage, and features numerous activities inspired by all eras. In addition to activities tied to the AMA’s 85th anniversary, the weekend will be loaded with highlights, including the world’s largest motorcycle swap meet, demo rides of current production bikes, motorcycling seminars, bike shows, stunt shows, the new product Manufacturers’ Midway, club corrals that feature both marque and regional clubs, and guided rides through the rolling Ohio countryside.

The weekend is also scheduled to feature a full slate of American Historic Motorcycle Racing Association competition, including road racing, motocross, observed trials, cross country and dirt track for both vintage and post-vintage motorcycles.

Tickets for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days 2009 are available from Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course at www.midohio.com or by phone at (800) MID-OHIO.

More announcements regarding the AMA’s 85th anniversary celebration, including events during and leading up to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, will be made soon.

Did you know that non O-ring chains should be cleaned and oiled regularly? And if you pressure wash your quad, the chain needs to be oiled immediately after to keep it from rusting.

To thoroughly clean and lube your quad’s chain, it’s best to pull the chain off the quad and wash it using a scrub brush in solvent. After the chain has been cleaned, apply chain oil or WD-40 to lube up that chain. Put the chain back on your quad, and between cleanings keep the chain running smoothly by using chain lube.

PIAA Corporation, a leader in Powersports lighting and accessories, has again teamed up with the World Off-Road Championship Racing Series (WORCS) to host this weekend’s 2nd Annual PIAA 8‑Hour UTV/ATV Endurance Race. The event will take place this coming Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Speedworld Raceway in Surprise, Ariz.

“Last year’s inaugural 8-hour race was a huge success,” Robertson said.  “We proved to the ATV, UTV and Powersports industry that PIAA lighting products are indeed the best in the world, proven everywhere from the Baja 1000 and Daytona 24-Hour sports car race to the World Rally circuit.”

As the presenting sponsor, PIAA will be providing financial support as well as offering a contingency program that will encourage racers to use PIAA halogen and HID lighting products.  The race starts at 4 p.m. and finishes at midnight: having a PIAA-equipped vehicle will once again be a distinct advantage.

“WORCS races are the ultimate test of man and machine,” explained WORCS owner Sean Reddish. “Teaming up with PIAA, the industry leader in power-sports lighting and putting on an UTV and ATV endurance race was a home run.”

Teams will race non-stop for eight hours around a 7-mile loop that starts on the Speedworld motocross circuit before heading out into the Arizona desert.  Separate overall winners will be awarded in both UTV and ATV divisions.  For UTVs, racing classes include Unlimited, Modified, Stock, and Ironman/woman; for ATVs, classes will be Pro A, B, and C; Women’s Pro A and B; Veterans 30+; Masters 40+; and Ironman/Woman.

PIAA’s contingency awards should inspire all competitors:  Overall finishers will be awarded $1000 for first, $500 for second, $250 for third.  To be eligible, vehicles must use PIAA HID or Halogen lamps and run PIAA decals.

PIAA has also been offering racers the opportunity to purchase PIAA lights at a special discounted price.  This offer has been available for registered racers ONLY; an official race registration number is required.  For details on this offer, as well as info on all PIAA UTV and ATV lighting products, visitwww.piaapowersports.com or call 503-489-6666.

Other race contingencies in play this weekend include WORCS’s 100% Pro Payback to the pro ATV and the Unlimited UTV class, and Motoworks exhaust’s $1000 payout to the overall ATV winner – if they run a Motoworks exhaust and decals.

For entry and class information, plus rules and regulations, visitwww.worcsracing.com, or call 435-635-1597.  Pre-entry is closed. Entry fee per team is $200 pre-entry, $225 day of race.

Polaris Brings ATV Team to DAKAR
Company becomes the first manufacturer to have an official DAKAR race team

Minneapolis, January 5, 2009 – For this year’s DAKAR, Polaris will be the first manufacturer to participate with an official ATV Team. Polaris France has four members, racing in the famous race.

“We are excited about being the first manufacturer to have an official race team for the DAKAR,” said Eric Nault, race team manager for Polaris. “Polaris France has put together a competitive team for the race and we look forward to the outcome.”

French Racer Hubert Deltrieu, winner of the DAKAR Series Central Europ, Lybia Desert Challenge, Pharaons Rallye and second at the DAKAR Series Portugal, will lead the DAKAR team.  Deltrieu will be accompanied by French Racers Eric Carlini and Betty Kraft. Kraft is one of only three women competing in this year’s DAKAR and has the goal to be the first woman to cross the finish line! Italian Racer Pietro Fogliani rounds out the team. Fogliani has raced the truck class at DAKAR three previous times and his experience will be invaluable to the team.

The racers chose the 2009 Outlaw 525 IRS for this grueling race as the quad has proven its tenacity and endurance in races with challenging terrain. The Outlaw 525 IRS’ Independent Rear Suspension soaks up the rough terrain minimizing rider fatigue which provides a nice advantage for the racers.

The DAKAR started on January 3 and concludes January 18 and can be followed at www.dakar.com.

The ATV Promoters Group (ATVPG), in conjunction with the American Motorcyclist Association and All-Terrain Vehicle Association, has announced the Class Structure and Supplemental Rules for the 2009 ITP Tires/Moose Racing AMA ATV Motocross Championship Presented by Parts Unlimited.

“We are very excited about the upcoming racing season even though our nation is suffering through a tough economic time,” said ATVPG Director Sam Gammon. “This year, after taking in a lot of feedback from racers, fans and stakeholders in the series, we believe our revisions to the rules and class structure will provide a fair, affordable and competitive racing series.”

“We’re proud of where ATV motocross racing has gone and where we believe it will go in the future,” Gammon continued. “We think the new rules will help pave the way for the next generation of top ATV motocross talent.” Another effort to keep racing reasonable includes no plans to change the entry and gate fee for racers or their families despite the escalated costs associated with race promotion.

The new rules can be accessed through THIS LINK on the ATVMotocross.com website.
